Torrents Terms

What is announce
Client announces its willingness to join a swarm (see below) and asks the tracker (see below) to add it in the swarm.

What is a chunk
Chunk is a any part of a torrent file. Files when being shared using torrents are treated as sum of several parts, each of which is downloaded almost independent of each other. Each of those segments are called chunks.

What is a Client
Client is a software which allows you to upload, share and download torrent files.

What is a Leech
Any peer who has a negative effect on the swarm by having a very poor share ratio. It can also refer to any peer without 100% of the data.

Who is a lurker
A lurker is a user that only downloads files using torrents but does not add new content. Unlike a leech, a lurker will seed what he or she has downloaded.

What is a Peer
A peer is anyone who is downloading or uploading the file

Who is a Seeder
A seeder is a peer that has a complete copy of the torrent and still offers it for upload.

What is Swarm
Together, all peers (including seeders) sharing a torrent are called a swarm.

What is a Tracker
A tracker is a server that keeps track of which seeds and peers are in the swarm. Clients continuously interact with trackers to receive information about the torrents files they process.
