What is Internet?

Internet is, well, as you know already, a global network of computers connected to each other in which users at any one computer can get information and also interact with other computers, provided they have the right permissions. However, not all computers connected to each other to exchange information can be said to comprise the Internet. So, what distinguishes the Internet from other networks of computers? Apart from the vast reach of the Internet, which no other network of computers has, it is the use of a standard set of protocols called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), which makes the Internet different. Protocols, as the name suggests, are set of standards which control and make the interaction in a network of computers possible. For example, IP is a unique ID assigned to computers on the Internet and is used to distinguish among computers, thus making connections possible. We will get into more nitty-gritty of protocols in the coming sections.
